Talking movies, music and other close encounters of the social media kind.
It’s that time again.
So here’s my predictions on who’ll win the top Oscars for 2016 (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Director). I’ve also pointed out the possible potential spoilers who may cause an upset on the night.
BEST PICTURE: THE REVENANT
Filmed in sub-zero conditions. Stunning cinematography. Using only natural light. Remarkable acting from DiCaprio. This movie is an epic masterpiece. Don’t mess with an epic masterpiece.
Potential spoiler: Spotlight
A compelling and well-told story. Gritty. Realistic. Authentic. A great ensemble cast. The critics are choosing this one to win. There’s definite potential for an upset.
BEST ACTOR: LEONARDO DiCAPRIO (The Revenant)
After 5 goes at it, this should be Leos’ Oscar for his brilliant performance. He truly suffered for his art with this film. And if he doesn’t win? then the Academy voters should all be mauled to death by that big grizzly bear.
Potential spoiler: Matt Damon (The Martian)
If there’s anyone who could spoil Leos’ party it could be Matt Damons’ funny performance as the astronaut biologist stuck on the planet Mars.
BEST ACTRESS: BRIE LARSON (Room)
She’s been winning all the awards leading up to the Oscars. Deserves to win for her powerful performance.
Potential spoiler: Saorise Ronan (Brooklyn)
The fact that Brie Larson has won all the awards, might sway the voters and give Saorise the win instead.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: SLYVESTER STALLONE (Creed)
Yo Rocky. The sentimental favourite. Expect the biggest standing O of the night if he gets the nod. Be fitting if Sly wins for the character that has defined his movie career (No Vaughan, not John Rambo).
Potential spoiler: Mark Rylance (Bridge Of Spies)
By out-acting Tom Hanks in ‘Bridge Of Spies’ with his charming performance, this rank outsider could cause an upset win and beat the Italian Stallion by technical knockout in the final round. But I’m not counting on it.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: KATE WINSLET (Steve Jobs)
Now wouldn’t that be something. Jack (DiCaprio) and Rose (Winslet) both go home with Oscars. Please, no-one sing that god-awful song by Celine Dion.
Potential spoiler: Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl)
Have not seen it, but the Hollywood insiders are tipping that she’s taking the statue on the night.
BEST DIRECTOR: GEORGE MILLER (Mad Max: Fury Road)
I thought Ridley Scott would be nominated for his work on “The Martian” but to my great shock he isn’t (He should’ve won it for Gladiator back in 2000).
So I’m picking George Miller for his stellar work on Mad Max: Fury Road – which had real stunts, no CGI, Charlize Theron and a Van Halen wanna-be punk, playing heavy metal guitar on the back of an amplified-up truck.
Potential spoiler: Alejandro Gonzales Inniaritu (The Revenant)
The inside moneys’ on the Mexican wizard to get the nod again for this epic film, but hes’ already won it last year for ‘Birdman’. That could be good enough reason for the voters to give the Oscar to Miller.
So there’s my predictions.
Be great to know what your picks are.
Let the Oscar battle commence.
